What happens if I have creditors harassing me from another country?

I was living with a family member in another country and I started accumulating debt. I came back to the US to find employment, but I have been struggling with this. I am now in a lot of debt and want to file for bankruptcy. Can I file for it here? or do I need to file for bankruptcy in the other place of residence?
