Can dependents file bankruptcy?

Although I am listed as a dependent of my parents, they do not help me out financially. In fact, the primary reason that I remain a dependent is so that I can stay on their insurance plan. Partly because I am on my own, I have considerable credit card debt and student loans that I do not think I will be able to pay back. Can I file for bankruptcy as a dependent?

Yes, you can file bankruptcy as a dependent. However, most likely you will not be able to get rid of your student loan debt.

You can file bankruptcy if you're eligible to file bankruptcy under a given chapter. It has nothing to do with being a dependent.
